I have a small apartment, that gets pretty hot. I've had my tank up and running now for almost six months, but the recent heat has created a new problem. All I smell now in the appartment is the skimmer. No matter what I do, I can't get rid of the smell. I clean it, and it still stinks up the place. All I can think of when I walk into my appartment, is I have my nose in fish poo.
Anyone have any ideas? What if I put something directly in the skimmer to neutralize the smell? Chlorine? Lemon, or something?
You might try the bathroom size ionic breeze from Sharper Image. I use this in the room with my cats' litter boxes, and you can't smell a thing. It "removes" the smell rather than just covering it up. If you install it right next to the skimmer that ought to do the trick.
Heres a link that might be helpful...

I looked up calcium hydroxide. It's the primary component of Kalk. Think that would work?
Man, I'd be scared if the tray overflowed. Death to everything.

It is Kalk, arm & hammer would probably work too. Why so stinky?

The heat in the appartment I guess. It's about 26 degrees all day. No circulation + heat + fish poo.
My tank is small, and I have a small algae problem. I get some crazy stuff in my skimmer. I clean it often too.
I'm sure you ment something other than 26 degrees, I don't know about you but 26 degrees is pretty damn cold to me!

If it's truly the skimmer thats stinky, then make yourself a filter for the skimmer. Most skimmers I've seen have a breather hole on the top cap, you put a piece of carbon impregnated filter material on the top of this hole and it should filter out the odors before they enter the room, since generally speaking thats the only place the collection cup odor can come from.
But if on the other hand, it's just general aquarium stink, then I would suggest getting a Hepa type of air filter for the room. I use a hepa style filter for my home office which stinks of ciggerette smoke at night with 2 of us in there and both smokers, but by morning the air actually smells clean and clear. I tried the Ionic Breeze and found it less than helpfull at even clearing up strong kitchen odors, like fish or onions.

I to had this problem and I found out that if you put some carbon in the bottom of the collection cup and a little fresh water that it helps get rid of the smell hope that helps
