Does anyone know where to get Rose Bulb Anemones? Once my tank is setup and running for about 6-8 months I want to get one of these as they seem to have the best success rate. All the online places I've checked don't have these.

Thanks

1. I would read my "Care Tips for the expert" thread over in the 'Tips' forum. I would do a lot of heavy reaserch on anemones, as you probably know only very few people can keep them alive longer than 2 years, and the average life span in captivity is around 3 months. I would wait, until your tank is at least a year old, or older, before attempting to keep one with sucess. I would also recommend that you have decent lighting to sustain its zooxanthellae.

2. I wouldn't recommend a rose anemone, but rather a Bubble Tip Anemone (BTA). These no doubt are the best suited for our tanks, and are the easiest to care for.

3. I would highly recommend that you do not order your anemones online. Usually during shipping, the anemones will be stressed, and most of the time will be lacking zooanthellae, which is very hard to get to re grow. I would recommend picking out a brown(full zooxanthellae) BTA. Sebae's are noctourious for ariving straved, and in horible condition

Recently, there have been reports of BTA's not only living for many years in captivity, but also of them reproducing.

A rose bulb anemone IS a BTA.

Bubble tips come in all colors. Picking a brown one will not ensure that it's any healthier than another color.

Actually, the last one I bought was brown. Within a week it turned green with pink tips.

Sebaes are hard to keep no matter what. They need extremely intense lighting.

Yeah, the rose bta is awesome. Like PH said, don't order it online. If you're in southern Ca., you might want to try this fish store in Pasadena. I was there about a month ago and they had about 5 clones for $100. Clones are the ones you want as they are hardier. Definitely wait until your tank is mature and stable.

I would remember that when shipping anemones there is a very high risk of them dying some of the hardest corals to ship and let them survive. whatever you do good luck :!:

sorry for the tardiness... I don't remember the name of the store. It's in Pasadena on colorado blvd. Between San Gabriel and Rosemead. I believe it's within a block or two away from OSH. The store is in the inside corner of a plaza.

the advise to wait until your tank is a little more mature is a good one but... if you maintain excellent water quality (regular water changes, good filtration [skimmer, liverock etc.]) and have decent lighting you can keep a bta happy. i added mine to my tank at about 3 months and it split after about being in the tank for 3 months. it also quadrupled in size. that was in a 55g tank (i recently moved everything into a 100g tank) and it had four 96watt pc lights on it (2 actinic). i placed the anemone about 2/3 of the way up.
hope this helps,
greg

Thanks for the info gregr....
Any chance of you selling a clone of your bta in about a year? :D

hah! i probably will still have the two twins in my tank in a year...
they are both rooted in a deep hole in a rock and i don't have the heart to pull them out- i really doubt i could get either one out without damaging them so i guess they're gonna stay. i'm cutting down on the feeding so hopefully they won't grow very much because if they do i'm gonna need a bigger tank!
