i am sure now that i want to convert my old 20 uk gal 90x30x30 cm freshwater tank in to a nano-reef and this is the setup sthat i plan is it ok:

1. add some new ASL T5 compact lighting
2.add LR/LS
3. protein skimmer?
4. maxijet 1200 powerhead

the main thing that i was wondering was is it possible not to have a external filter but just use LR/LS DSB? advice on how much of each to use.

secondly do i have to use a skimmer i dont mind doing weekly water changes becuse i have more tme to spend with my fish.

help appreciated thx :)

I've heard yes and no on the skimmer issue. As for the tank, just make sure that you've never used any copper based medications in it, because if you did it will really hurt your inverts. 15 pounds of LR should work out well, depending on what kind of rock it is. As for the filter issue, that really depends on what you are wanting to keep in your tank. If you're wanting to keep something that needs pristine water conditions, then it might be prudent to get an external filter. If it's just going to be a few fish and some mushroom corals or polyps, then you really wouldn't need an external filter if you were diligent in your water changes. Good luck :D.

Oh and about the DSB- unless you are going to have a sump for this aquarium (which I don't think you were planning on), it is going to take up a lot of your already limited space. You might consider going with a shallower sandbed, around 1-2". Again though, that all depends on what you want to have in your tank. If you want to have burrowing animals then it might be a good idea to have a deeper sandbed. This is JMO of course and you probably know what they say about opinions .

From what I have learned it is enough to keep it alive. Most likely it will fade to a brown color and will not open fully. Your going to most likely need MH. I am currently working on a 20H. I will have a wet/dry filter, refugium, protein skimmer, and MH lights. I also plan on having Deco LR from www.gulf-view.com
